As our active merchants have noticed already, at the end of December, we rolled out one of the biggest updates in Twice's history - a wholly redesigned inventory architecture and inventory management section.

In this article, we go through what has changed and why. If you want to learn more about the concepts of inventory, articles, and Stock Keeping Units, you can visit our Help Center. →

How inventory management has changed in Twice

Previously in Twice, each product used to have its own inventory. So, if you wanted to add 50 mountain bikes to your inventory, you had to create the mountain bike product first and then define how many of them you have. And the same process had to be repeated for every product. This approach works for tracking and preventing overbookings but has its limitations, especially when commercializing the product catalog.

In the new inventory architecture, we have split the inventory from the products and moved it to its own main view. Furthermore, the SKU structure is a new addition and helps merchants determine which physical products can be used to fulfill different orders.

Having the inventory and product catalog separated just adds HUGE amounts of flexibility, clarity, and control over how merchants can build their inventories and product catalogs and connect them to different sales channels.

What you may expect in the future

One might ask, why fix something that isn't broken?

In this case, the new inventory architecture puts us in a better position when developing new features around inventory management and providing new ways for our merchants to do business with their physical assets. We have, for example, already introduced a new single-article view with the complete usage history of an article. Something that didn't exist before.

The single-article view is only the beginning of our plans to develop Twice's inventory management and commerce tools. Next, we're planning to enable selling merchandise through Twice and introduce better and more flexible ways of building product packages and combinations of physical assets and services.

Stay tuned!
